Traditional seductive gender roles typically contrast masculine muscular, overt ‘subjects’ of desire with feminine curvy, passive ‘objects’ of desire. Based on photographs of statues from the 19th century to the present, taken in French, Dutch, Italian, and Brazilian cemeteries, this work explores how commemorative sculpture can reflect, or challenge, such seductive gender roles stereotypes.
